Your mental well-being is just a Skype Call Away From Now.Online psychological counselling has been successfully flourishing in the western countries. India too, has seen a rise in the number of such online platforms. According to the report from National Commission on Macroeconomics and Health, 2005, nearly 1-2 crore Indians had suffered from grave mental disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; while nearly 5 crore people had suffered from depression and anxiety at the end of 2005.

The reason beind its increasing popularity is the convenience of online platforms which gives you the option of undergoing counselling from your desk. It is really tensionable thing which has been happening in our country sinces last decade. With the increase in the use of technology its happening in continuous ways.Last year, a study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) released a week ago, showed that 42.5 per cent of employees in the private sector suffer from depression or general anxiety disorder. Dr Ajay Phadke, founder of, says, “In India, there’s still a stigma around mental illness and so people who really need help, have inhibitions of heading to a psychologists’ clinic. This is where online counselling portals help since it provides you with the anonymity you need.”

These portals are also a boon to the urban workforce, who can be connected at the click of a button in their cubicle. Few of the popular choices of people for the counselling are,, among others. It usually starts with chatting online with the counsellors, who inform them an approximate number of sessions that would be required. Though these websites are much help, is it completely the ‘go-to-place’?

Nipa Sanghavi, clinical psychologist at Evolve-the mind centre (Worli and Matunga), says, “I believe this differs from case to case, forexample in some cases severity of the case is not too clinical and grave, then I would support online counselling. Then it’s easier to talk to them over the phone or over video chat and try to listen to their problems. But if it is too clinical, then I would suggest face to face counselling because then the nonverbal communication comes to our notice only while the session is on, in person. Though I don’t completely strike out online counselling, but I do feel severe issues should be tackled only with offline counselling sessions.”
